high performance vehicles

last night on the way to megillah reading (for purim), jo, ethan and i were talking about big synagogues and the havurot we are involved in. jo argued that the number of people who are actively invovled any given synagogue isn't so different from the amount of people who are invovled in any given havurah and that the difference is the number of people who are not actively invovled.
trying to make sure i understood, i asked her whether she was saying that "the havurot and synagogues have similar engines, but they need to pull around a lot more car?"

perhaps that is why havurot have higher "performance"--same engine, less weight.

that reminds me of a talk i heard sid schwartz give, relating to his book, regarding the fact most synagogues rely on a core of about 200 people to keep things going.

200 people! Lots of synagogues don't even have that many people, let alone active people.
