Like The Dread Pirate Roberts before him, Juan Valdez is actually series of dudes who promote Columbian Coffee to the world. Today Carlos Sanchez has announced his retirement:

Bogota - Colombian coffee producers are choosing a new actor to play Juan Valdez, the iconic poncho-clad farmer who, with his mule Conchita, has promoted one of this country's biggest exports for decades.

Carlos Sanchez, the 71-year-old actor who has appeared around the world as the avuncular, mustached Juan Valdez for 37 years, is hanging up his trademark straw hat.

His replacement will be named by early July, the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation said.

The big question is whether Carlos Sanchez will sail one voyage as the first mate.
